Relationship Skills for Individuals

Short-Term Therapy Intensive Focusing on Psychoeducation and Skill-Building

As therapy becomes increasingly common, I have observed a growing trend in relationships where one individual engages in therapy while the other does not. Often the individual not in therapy doesn’t feel they need therapy, is unsure of what they would talk about, is understandably hesitant to open up old wounds or explore painful memories, can’t imagine how discussing the past could be helpful in the present, or is not ready to commit to therapy due to time constraints or financial resources.

This can sometimes lead to tension in the relationship. The person in therapy may feel frustrated, perceiving that they are putting in all the effort, while the other individual may be made to feel not good enough or even criticized for not engaging in the same process. Over time, these feelings can strain the relationship and unintentionally lead to emotional distance, despite the initial hope that therapy by one partner would strengthen their bond.

Not everyone needs long-term therapy as many people can be successful and generally happy without it. But a lot of us weren't taught in school or at home how to recognize our triggers, regulate our reactions, or communicate clearly. This can often lead to conflict with the ones we love most. Almost every unhelpful thing we do in a relationship is rooted in an unconscious attempt to emotionally protect ourselves or fulfill a need we may not even know we have.

I designed this service to create a supportive and compassionate environment for you to reflect about your relationships and learn skills for emotional regulation and healthy communication.

While there is always a possibility that painful emotions may arise, the purpose of this service is to help you increase awareness into relationship behaviors/patterns and identify small changes that can be made so you and your loved one(s) feel more seen, heard, and connected. It is not intended to deep dive into the past or engage in intensive emotional or trauma processing.

Who is this for?

  • Individuals who have been asked by loved ones to attend therapy to work on communication skills within the relationship but do not want to do couples therapy, family therapy, or long-term individual therapy

  • Individuals not currently in a romantic relationship but interested in exploring patterns from past relationships or those experiencing an estrangement, that was not their choice, from a family member

  • Individuals who are interested in therapy but are hesitant to commit to long-term therapy because they have no idea what they are supposed to talk about

  • Individuals who have been to therapy previously but addressed issues different than the issues now coming up in their relationship or need a quick refresher

  • Individuals who aren’t ready for the emotional, financial, or time commitment of ongoing therapy but would like to build self-awareness, coping skills for emotions, and communication skills at an accelerated pace

What are the goals?

  • Improve the ability to recognize your triggers in relationship conflicts and your automatic reactions to those triggers

  • Learn to communicate in a manner that helps your partner better understand you

  • Gain a better understanding of your own needs in a relationship

  • Develop coping strategies to help manage anxiety, sadness and anger, enabling self soothing and reflection, which will further broaden constructive, relational communication with partners, family, or friends

  • Build more self-awareness and self-compassion

  • Recognize areas for personal development and establish priorities for future therapeutic work should you choose to pursue ongoing individual, family, or couple therapy after the intensive
